Try using a shampoo that contains peppermint or tea tree oil: two agents that soak up excess natural oil and serve as great antiseptics to the scalp.
FADING OR LIGHTENING COLOR
The process of oxidation is what causes your hair to get lighter. Using a shampoo that contains sunflower extracts and phospholipids will reverse the oxidation process and add a coat of protection.
SALTY BEACH HAIR (NOT THE GOOD KIND)
There’s nothing worse than leaving the beach with dry, crunchy locks. We recommend doing an apple cider vinegar or lemon juice rinse after thoroughly washing your hair with a lot of water to get any salt out.
If the cuticle is lifted or cracked, water seeps into the hair shaft and splits the follicles. Try moisturizing your hair with ingredients like coconut milk, which will condition and strengthen every single strand.
FLAT AND DULL LOCKS
Choose volumize and shine in your next Function of Beauty hair goals to begin treating it with ingredients like rice bran and passionfruit.
Avoid oxidation by ensuring your shampoo is rich in antioxidants which will coat your strands and protect your hair. Looking for ingredients rich in antioxidants? Algae extract, ginger root, beet root extract and black oak extract.
GLOSSIER INVISIBLE SHIELD SUNSCREEN
Glossier’s Invisible Shield is truly going to change our face-game this coming season by neutralizing UV rays and offering a soothing gel-finish.
Dirty Lemon beverages will be stocked up in our fridges and beach bags to make sure we’re getting the proper nutrients and vitamins we’ll need while we sit out in the hot sun.
Sleek and comfortable Lively suits are going to be our absolute go-to’s for swimwear this season especially their high waisted bottoms and cool color block one-pieces.
BALMY BEACH BLANKET
We’re loving For Love and Lemon’s stylish Balmy Beach Blanket to curl up with this summer, complete with a soft, cushion finish and gorgeous string tassels.
SUPERGOOP LIP SCREEN
We’ll be throwing Supergoop’s Lip Screen SPF 50 into our beach bag this season. Bonus? It’s chock full of grape polyphenols and TSA friendly.
HAIR TURBAN AND HAT
Keep your locks protected this summer by adding a great straw hat by Janessa Leone to your beach bag, or even this super sleek hair turban by Missoni.
FOR THE TROPICAL TRIP…. The French Braided Pigtails
Start by parting your hair down the center and braiding back each side normally. Once your braids hit about halfway down your ear, secure each side of the remaining hair with elastics.
FOR THE LAKEHOUSE WEEKEND…. The Half Up Top Knot
The half-up half down top-knot will be a literal lifesaver, pun intended. Once your lake-soaked hair is washed and dried, tie up the top half into a bun with an elastic and leave the rest flowing down.
FOR CITY CRUISING…. Space Buns
Try pinning up pigtails into two space buns with a couple of bobby pins and a little spray of hairspray to make your individuality shine on your next city excursion.
FOR CAMPING…. The Twisted Pony
Start by parting your hair down the middle and gathering it into two sections. Loosely pony tail them right above the nape of your neck. Now go back and find that middle part in the loose root of your ponytail, separate it into its two original parts, and flip the secured elastic section into the parted opening you have formed.
FOR THE SAILING EXCURSION…. The Crown-Braid and Bun
Parting your hair to either side, and braiding each front section. Secure the ends of each braid behind each ear with bobby pins, and gather the rest of your hair in a soft, low bun.
HAIR LIGHTENING IS ACTUALLY CAUSED BY OXIDATION
“What’s chemically happening here is that the ultra-violet part of the sunlight reacts with the melanin in your hair,” says our Lead Chemist, “making it more susceptible to pollutants, like ozone, which is a very strong oxidizer.” Oxidizers are elements used in the bleaching process that make your hair lighter.
YOU MIGHT BE MORE EXPOSED TO THIS OXIDATION IF YOU LIVE IN A CITY
Since the combination of sunlight and environmental pollutants is what causes hair lightening and oxidation, city-dwellers might experience this process more. "Because when you have things like ground-level ozone, these are the pollutants that are getting worked up by the sun, and are thus affecting your hair.”
IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOUR HAIR IS ARTIFICIALLY COLORED OR NOT
Oxidation can happen on any hair type, whether it’s your natural color or a newly-dyed job. You’ll probably notice it more if you have your hair colored only because it’s not really in a natural state.
IT’S A LOOK … BUT IT’S A DAMAGED ONE
“It’s a damaged look, sun bleached hair,” Mark asserts. “It may look good, but it doesn’t do well for your hair in the long run.” If this is a look you know and love, we recommend using shampoos and conditioners with plenty of antioxidants to battle those oxidizers and serve as ‘sunscreen’ for your summer strands.
Try using a glowing self-tanner or serum to warm up and give some sparkle to your skin tone. We recommend trying the Rise + Glow skin serum set by Drunk Elephant for hydration and nutrients.
HOLOGRAPHIC AND GOLDEN MAKEUP HIGHLIGHTERS
Our top highlight picks for this summer are Milk Makeup’s Supernova and Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop. One swipe with either of these on your cheekbones, down your nose, and above your cupid’s bow will instantly enhance any skin tone and complexion.
